silly question, I am sure
But in the Harry Potter movie yesterday, there was one plot hole that struck me particularly strongly, and I don't remember whether it is explained better in the book.

Dumbledore tells Harry that it's essential he finds out what Tom Riddle was asking Slughorn about. Harry eventually discovers that it was Horcruxes. Dumbledore looks shocked and says "that's worse than anything I suspected". In the next breath he tells Harry he's already found 3 of the Horcruxes...

Do what? If Dumbledore already knew there were 3, how can it be such a surprise to hear that's what Riddle was asking about?

Otherwise a fun film, very pretty. For me, it has somewhat the same flaws as the books in that the characters don't really come to life for me, apart from Snape who steals the show as usual. But Ron under the influence of a love potion was hilarious, and the love stories do quite a bit to make up for the lack of a real plot arc in this film which, again like the book, can fairly be described as "the end - part I". Overall kind of dull, but that's what I thought of the first film (which I couldn't be arsed to finish watching). So if you liked any of the previous films, and/or are a fan of the books, I think you will love it!

Just relistening to audiobook in lab at mo. I don't remember Dumbledore being quite so surprised in the book. I expect it's because Riddle started asking about them when so young maybe? Or that he was already planning to split his soul so many times?

I will have to listen to more tomorrow to get to that part :)

So why is it such a big deal to find out what the true memory is?

So Harry feels useful & is kept out of Dumbledore's way maybe?

I don't remember the detail from the book (eg the actual size of the gap between things) but I wouldn't rule out Dumbledore using magic to: (a) find out from other people's memories what the horcruxes were and realise he had some; (b) cheat by going back in time to either find out or acquire them.

I wondered about that too - I think the important fact that Harry finds out is that Tom Riddle was planning on making SEVEN Horcruxes, or at least splitting his soul into seven parts.

I guess DD had worked quite a lot out already, and was probably a bit miffed that when he destroyed Marvolo Gaunt's ring (offstage, at the cost of his hand) it was not enough to make Voldemort vulnerable.

There's lots of plot in the HP books that doesn't bear examining too closely ;-) but I very much enjoy them anyway.

Maybe the bit about their having to have been 7 murders? I thought the over reaction was a bit much, but then much of the acting was awful...
